The Birmingham Chapter of AORN was established August 28, 1969 and started with 53 members. Our founder and
first president was Doris Coppage. Our current President is Susan Southwick.
Through the years we have grown to the largest chapter in Alabama, sending multiple delegates and alternates to
represent us in 2009 at the 55th AORN National Congress in Chicago, Illinois. Through
educational grants from our generous industry partners, the chapter funds delegates', alternates' and sometimes
members @ large expenses including registration, transportation, lodging and food. This helps to ensure that we maintain an
active voice in our national organization. The attendees are charged with obtaining critical information and
sharing this knowledge with the chapter and their workplaces. Delegates, alternates and members at large are
chapter members selected through a point system documented in the membership book. This book is available
for member updating at each meeting. All member points are tallied each August by the membership chair and
presented at the September meeting. You must become a member to enjoy the chapter funded trip to Congress. Denver
is the site for the 2010 National Congress. Points accrued by members during the 2008-2009 chapter
calendar year will be used to select delegates to the 2010 National Congress in Denver. We look forward
to seeing you at our meetings. :)
